Alex Burton, Ward 4 City Council member, said the vote was "proactive."

The utility company is expected to seek another electric rate increase next month

The Evansville City Council has agreed to intervene the next time CenterPoint Energy tries to raise rates. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

CenterPoint is expected to make a case to raise its electric rates to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission next month.

The City Council voted Monday night to intervene in the case, with At-Large counselor Johnathon Weaver casting the only “no” vote.

Missy Mosby and Ron Beane did not attend the meeting.

Councilman Alex Burton voted “yes” after he and others heard from voters before last week’s election:

"Constantly heard about how the energy bills were impacting families and this is our opportunity and so we're looking to intervene."

Burton calls the move “pro-active”:

"So, prior to any public comment we're making a stance saying our bills do not need to go up any more and doing what I consider our fair share of representing the residents of Evansville and making sure that our bills aren't increased."

The council will have to hire an attorney for the effort. Burton says they will do so responsibly.
