Authorities investigate the fire at 1132 Bayard Park Drive on Wed., Nov 1.

Evansville firefighters extinguished the basement fire on Bayard Park Drive

An explosion and fire has displaced eight people from an Evansville apartment building. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to 1132 Bayard Park Dr., between Kentucky Ave. and Highway 41, just before 2:00 Wednesday afternoon.

EFD Division Chief Mike Larson says an occupant smelled smoke and went next door to call 9-1-1.

After leaving the apartment, Larson says the occupant heard what sounded like an explosion.

The first crews on scene reported smoke coming from the rear of the structure, went inside, and attacked flames in the basement.

Firefighters were also told that an occupant was still in the basement but found no one. They were later told the individual was at a relative’s home

Larson says it took crews about 25 minutes to extinguish the fire due to the number of belongings in the basement.

He says the belongings were also a factor in the cause of the fire being classified as undetermined.

The Red Cross was notified to assist eight people who were displaced between two apartments.

No injuries were reported.
