Pesky Fire Damages Evansville Plant

Crawford, Jeffrey N

The early morning fire at Kerry Ingredients was discovered in equipment

The Indiana State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating a blaze at an Evansville factory. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

The fire broke out just after 1:00 Wednesday morning at Kerry Ingredients in the 1500 block of Park Street.

EFD Division Chief Mike Larson says the first crews to arrive reported a “working fire” and requested more units.

Larson says employees got out safely.

The smoke activated the plant’s fire suppression system, and crews found fire inside equipment used in the manufacturing process.

Larson says the blaze was considered extinguished in about an hour and a half but the search for hotspots was lengthy.

One firefighter slipped and fell on a slippery surface inside the building and was checked on scene.

Crews were called back to the plant shortly after 7:00 a.m. for what Larson described as a “very small gas leak” away from the area of the fire.

A CenterPoint crew stopped the leak.

Larson says the State Fire Marshall’s Office is leading the investigation to determine what caused the fire.
