New Victory Sign Lights Up Main St.

The new Victory Theatre sign was illuminated Friday night

The decades-long effort culminated Friday night

The exterior of the Victory Theatre in Downtown Evansville looks much like it did nearly a century ago. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

Victory and Ford Center Executive Director Scott Schoenike counted down – slowly -- to the illumination of the new four-story tall sign and marquee outside the Victory Theatre:

"2.....1...."—applause

Hundreds of people attended Friday night’s lighting ceremony, including retired Evansville Historic Preservation Officer Dennis Au. He said the sign is an amazing replica of the original sign from the 1920’s:

"it's remarkable that it looks much the same as it did."

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke was pleased to see the decades-long project come to fruition:

"The Friends of Victory Theatre, VenueWorks, the city, the state came along and provided funding to get it done. So, it's been a long time in the making but because just like everything else we do that succeeds down here it's because people work together."

Indiana Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch also attended the event in her hometown.
