Utility companies are reminding everyone to call before you dig. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:
Today’s date, August 11th – or 8-1-1 – is a reminder to call 8-1-1 before any digging project.
That’s because underground utility lines are frequently hit, sometimes causing natural gas leaks.
CenterPoint Energy Vice President Chasta Martin says calling 811 or going online to Call811.com is the only way to learn what utilities are underground.
Martin says crews will mark the locations so homeowners and professional contractors can dig safely and keep the community “safe and connected.”
CenterPoint says on average, an underground utility line is damaged every few minutes because someone began digging without first contacting 811.
