Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden is mourning the loss of a camel. WNIN’s John Gibson reports:
The zoo says its male Bactrian camel, Franklin, died shortly after his 21st birthday.
Officials called it a “long, happy life.”
Franklin was born in 2002 at Zoo New England and came to Mesker in 2006.
Mesker says he touched the lives of his keepers and visitors over the years.
Franklin had been dealing with age-related arthritis.
Mesker says his care team gave him excellent care, including ground breaking therapy which gave him an extra 4 years.
Officials said the decision was made to humanely euthanize the camel once his quality of life was being impacted and treatment options had been exhausted.
