Fathers -- and father figures -- are encouraged to escort their kids to school this week. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The head of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Human Relations Commission, Diane Clements-Boyd, says the Million Fathers March will be observed on Friday at Lincoln, Lodge, and Glenwood schools:
"We're asking fathers to make that commitment and doing it in this symbolic way by taking their child to school."
Boyd says the event has been promoted in Evansville since 2012:
"They basically are outside in front with the principal and others giving kids high fives, saying have a great year."
Boyd also asks employers to allow fathers time to take part:
"You know, we think that's just one way that employers can contribute and participate in this effort."
Friday is the first day that all students attend EVSC schools.
Research shows children whose fathers take an active role in their educational lives earn better grades, score higher on tests, enjoy school more, and are more likely to graduate high school and attend college.
