A federal judge has sentenced an Evansville man to more than 15 years in prison for a drug-related death. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:
Judge Richard Young sentenced 29-year-old Kalib Scott Powell to 188 months in prison after pleading guilty to dealing fentanyl resulting in death.
Prosecutors say Powell sold the female victim a half-gram of fentanyl powder in February 2019.
Two days later, the victim overdosed and died. The cause of death was determined to be fentanyl intoxication.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office tracked down Powell using the victim’s cell phone.
Investigators determined he had been warned by a customer that the fentanyl powder that it was very strong and “someone was going to die.”
Nevertheless, prosecutors say Powell continued to sell the fentanyl powder knowing the danger.
Authorities say fentanyl is now the leading cause of death in the United States.
