Permit Expires for Coal-to-Diesel Plant

Environmentalists cheer the expiration that could mean the end of the Spencer County project

A permit to build a coal-to-diesel plant in Spencer County has expired. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management notified Riverview Energy that its permit for a plant near Dale “is no longer valid.”

IDEM says the Delaware-based company failed to meet a key deadline regarding construction.

It’s a win for environmental groups that have been fighting the project for more than five years.

In a release, the groups applauded IDEM’s decision saying the plant would have created “climate and health-harming emissions” on communities already overburdened by pollution.

Riverview has 18 days to appeal IDEM’s decision.

The environmental groups filed a lawsuit to stop the permit. The suit is still before the Indiana Court of Appeals
