EFD: The injured occupants didn't want to go to a hospital

Evansville firefighters quickly extinguished an apartment fire on the city’s East Side. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Crews were called to 2625 Sugar Mill Drive just before 7 a.m. Friday when a resident reported a mattress on fire.

Division Chief Mike Larson says the first crews on the scene reported black smoke coming from the building.

Larson says firefighters quickly located the fire and contained it to the one unit.

He said crews ventilated adjoining apartments due to high carbon monoxide levels and occupants returned to their apartments once the levels dropped.

The fire was considered extinguished in about 10 minutes.

One occupant suffered 1st degree burns on their right hand and the other occupant complained of trouble breathing. Both were evaluated on scene and did not want to go to the hospital.

The Red Cross was contacted to assist and no firefighters were injured.

An investigator ruled the fire accidental.
