Block party in Evansville Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Juneteenth Negro League Tribute Baseball game on Saturday, Henderson Event Monday

Junteenth is Monday June 19. It commemorates the day in 1865, when Union Troops arrived in Galveston Texas to inform slaves of African desent that they’d been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation two years earlier.

Now a national holiday, there are several events this weekend.

Margaret Hairston of Radford Virginia, is helping set up a Juneteenth celebration flag on a large party tent, as the 4th Annual Juneteenth Block Party kicks off on Evansville’s South Side.

Her son Steven Hairston has co-organized the event.

Music is already pumping across the field off of Culver near Cass Avenue, which features food and vendor tents and field games Friday afternoon.

It’s a family-friendly event, running Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday includes fireworks at dusk. Sunday includes a worship service and live music and spoken word performances.

Also on Saturday — The Third Annual Juneteenth Negro League Tribute Baseball game is at 5 p.m. at Bosse Field.

A Juneteenth celebration is being held Monday in Henderson Kentucky from 4-7 p.m. at Central Park off main and Washington streets.
