Job is part time and includes food prep, cashier, cleaning; about 15,000 lunches and 6,500 breakfasts are served by staff all 180 days of the school year

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) is hosting three open interview sessions in June for the position of food service assistant. The first session is this Thursday, June 15 from 8 a.m. to 11a.m.

EVSC is looking to hire more than 40 food service assistants for the 2023-2024 school year.

This deficit of 40 employees is spread across 38 buildings. Some locations are short staffed and some are fully staffed, said Director of Food Nutrition Nora Burgess.

She doesn’t want that deficit to affect either students or other food service employees.

“Obviously, we want to be able to feed all of our students. They can't learn if they aren't fed. And we, in order for us to keep the staff that we have, we need more staff so that their workload isn't so tough.”

These are the workers who help prepare food but also run a cash register, clean and do dishes. They start at three hours per day, but can expand into additional hours.

Currently EVSC food service employees working through the summer are staffing one of the many summer feeding sites the district provides.

About 64,000 meals are served through the summer feeding program, but 15,000 lunches and 6,500 breakfasts are served all 180 days of the school year.

Burgess said good student nutrition is linked to learning.

“Students receive most of their nutrition throughout their day. And while they're at school, and if they aren't, you know, hungry students are not able to learn. So it is a vital role in determining our student's success.”

Burgess said anyone who is interested can go to one of the three open interviews or fill out an application online. Applicants must be over the age of 18 and pass a background check.
