Handy Fest Offers Barbecue, Live Music

Handy Fest

The festival in Downtown Henderson runs through Saturday

The sound of live music and the aroma of barbecue will take over Henderson’s riverfront, starting Wednesday. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

The 2023 W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival offers four nights of live music from the likes of Shemekia Copeland.

She performs Saturday night on the stage in Audubon Mill Park:

Pre-festival lunch breaks and happy hour performances began Monday. The festival gets underway in earnest Wednesday evening with performances from End of the Line, Ally Venable, and Southern Avenue.

Thursday is Zydeco night, with performances by Dwayne Dopsie and Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp band.

Some of the biggest names in blues perform Friday and Saturday, including Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, The War and Treaty, and Copeland.

Handy Fest is a free event but organizers are always looking for volunteers, sponsors, and donations to keep it free.
