IDEM Issues Statewide Ozone Alert

File

Friday is the second Air Quality Action Day for southwest Indiana this week

Officials have declared an Air Quality Action Day across Indiana for Friday. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is again predicting high levels of ground-level ozone due to bright sunshine, high temperatures, and light winds.

Children, the elderly, and anyone with lung or heart conditions are advised to reduce or avoid exertion outdoors.

The National Weather Service is predicting sunny skies and highs in the 90’s through Sunday.

IDEM encourages everyone to drive less, carpool, use public transportation, or work from home if possible.

You’re also urged to reduce idling, avoid refueling your vehicle or using gasoline-powered lawn equipment until evening, and conserve energy in your home and workplace.

Ground-level ozone is created when sunlight and heat combine with vehicle exhaust, factory emissions, and gasoline vapors.

The latest alert follows one issued on Tuesday for six Indiana regions.
