Several mobile and stationary sites will serve breakfast and lunch; the USDA has lifted COVID-era rules allowing children to eat the food off premises, programming to be added

Owensboro Public Schools are Participating in the Summer Food Service Program through the US Department of Agriculture.

It begins May 30th, and ends July 28th. There will be no meal service June 19 and July 4, or on weekends.

The district will be serving breakfast and lunch for anyone under 18 years of age at seven non-mobile sites and four mobile food service units.

District Public Information Officer Jared Revlett said they served more than 117,500 meals summer of 2022, and about 75-percent of students would qualify for free-and-reduced lunches.

“… so for a lot of those students, the only meals that they get throughout the year come from the school district, so the breakfast and lunch that they get every school day, you know, that may be the only meal that they get, they may not have that opportunity when they get home.”

Revlett said children need not be an OPS student, or necessarily an Owensboro resident.

One change from last year is that the USDA is lifting COVID-era rules governing these feeding sites, Revlett said.

“So since 2020, everybody has been able to come pick up a meal and then leave, that's no longer the case.”

He said feeding locations will now also include some sort of programming at the sites.
