The Vanderburgh County fair isn’t until the end of July, but big announcements are already being made about the upcoming events — such as motocross racing.
It’s been a few years since this sport has thrilled audiences at the Vanderburgh County Fair, but recently the fair announced the popular offroad motorcycle racing competition will return.
There are about 35 classes of motocross racers with quads, dirt bikes and a range of talents and also motor size.
Motocross promoter Jason Stills said he had been promoting motocross races at other local fairs like Gibson County.
“We attract riders from, you know, about the next three or four states — Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois,” he said. “We average usually between three and 400 riders. So that's a pretty good draw for a small county fair.”
He said there’s even a $2,500 dollar prize for the professional racers.
New this year are electric motorcycles in a youth class because it has been successful in other county fairs nearby, said stills.
He said it's a trend that’s probably here to stay — especially with major manufacturers releasing electric motorcycles.
“Do I say that the electric is going to completely take over? I really hope not. But I think it's coming,” he said. “I would say, the next probably five years, you're gonna see more and more electric bikes out there.”
Right now, he’s getting all the details ready for the races — such as the multitude of prizes for the races.
They'll begin building and testing the race tracks for safety.
The Vanderburgh County Fair also announced main stage entertainment — country music performers Drake Milligan and Dylan Schneider will perform July 26th.
The fair opens July 23, and closes July 29.
