The Superfund event is Thursday evening at Central Library

Residents have an opportunity to learn about lead and arsenic levels in Evansville. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will conduct an open house and health fair regarding yard cleanups in the Jacobsville Neighborhood Superfund site.

The Superfund site includes Jacobsville and a dozen more Evansville neighborhoods.

The EPA invites residents who have not already had their yards tested to bring soil samples in plastic bags for a quick reading of lead levels.

Officials from the Vanderburgh County Health Department will discuss concerns about health issues related to lead and arsenic exposure.

Free blood lead testing will be available for children ages six and under with results within minutes.

Public health agencies generally recommend blood testing for children who live in homes built before 1978 or if there are elevated levels of lead in the yard.

Officials say chemicals from industrial activities dating as far back as the 1880’s can cause health problems in parts of the city.

The open house and health fair is Thursday from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Central Library’s Browning Event Room.
