Roads Close in Wesselman Park for Salamanders

Wesselman Woods

The small reptiles and frogs need to cross at least one road in the park to mate

It’s time to make way for salamanders in Wesselman Park. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

The team at Wesselman Woods will conduct its annual road closures in the park -- outside the Nature Preserve -- as efforts continue to protect native salamander and frog species.

To ensure a safe salamander crossing, officials have closed off the park loop near the Nature Preserve.

Officials say salamanders emerge from hibernation in February and begin travelling toward wetlands for mating.

The creatures travel to the vernal pool in the middle of Wesselman Park, and must cross at least one road to reach the pool.

The gate closures will be from dusk to dawn Monday through Friday.

Gates will also be closed from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through April 1st.

The team at Wesselman Woods says the closures should not affect park activities during normal daylight hours.
