Demolition in Southern Illinois Shakes Area

EMA

Some residents wondered if it was an earthquake

You may have felt the earth move at about 9:00 Friday morning. WNIN’s John Gibson reports it was NOT an earthquake:

People reported the shake on social media and some residents called 9-1-1, wondering if an earthquake or explosion had occurred in the Evansville area.

The Vanderburgh County Emergency Management Agency was among groups trying to determine what it was.

Less than an hour after the initial reports, the local EMA tracked down the source of the shake: a controlled demolition of two mine silos at the closed Amax Coal Mine, southwest of Mt. Carmel.

The blast was felt at least as far away as Evansville.

There were no reports of damage outside the demolition area.
