Avian flu has been confirmed in geese and other water birds in Gibson County. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says about 700 geese, primarily snow geese, were found dead in the western part of the county.
The agency says that area is currently home to more than 100,000 snow geese.
The DNR, in partnership with federal and private entities, has increased surveillance of birds throughout the state to monitor for other potential outbreaks.
If you see sick birds or find multiple birds dead in a single area, you’re asked to report them to the DNR.
The agency says hunters that harvest wild birds should use standard safety procedures and cook meat to an internal temperature of 165 degrees to prevent a food safety risk.
