AES to Retire Last Coal Unit at Petersburg Next Year

AES

Company plans to switch to natural gas and solar

AES plans to shut down its second coal-fired power unit in Petersburg next year and convert two others to natural gas by 2025. WNIN’s John Gibson reports:

The energy company presented a slideshow this week that showed the planned closure and conversion to gas for its third and fourth units.

Environmentalists have long called the Petersburg plant a “super polluter” and Wendy Bredhold of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign says she‘s disappointed that AES is not replacing the units with renewable energy.

She says the company should fully retire the Petersburg operation by 2028 and replace it with renewables.

AES is planning a solar project in addition to the gas conversion at Petersburg.
