Officials have declared an Open Burn Emergency in Vanderburgh County. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The Emergency Management Agency says the week-long burn ban has been issued for all unincorporated areas of Vanderburgh County.
The county says anyone who sets, attempts to set, or allows an open fire can be fined $500 if convicted.
That includes fire pits.
The only exceptions are grills used for cooking and those who first obtain a written permit from the fire department having primary jurisdiction over where the fire is planned.
Dry and breezy conditions are expected to continue in the Evansville area through Monday, creating a potential tinder box for lawns, fields, and wooded areas.
The National Weather Service says next the chance for rain comes Tuesday.
