New Coal Mine Planned for Henderson County

File

Portal will be expansion of Riverview operation in Union County

Coal mining is returning to Henderson County. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

Alliance Coal LLC has announced plans for a $35 million underground mine in the southwestern part of the county.

It will be an expansion of the existing River View Mine in adjacent Union County.

The River View Henderson Portal 1 is expected to employ 260 people, with some workers to be transferred from the existing River View operation.

The company says wages will average $34.50 an hour plus benefits.

The new 30,000 square foot operation is planned near the intersection of Kentucky 145 and Sulfur Springs Road, south of Corydon.

Construction is expected to begin in April 2023 and be complete by the end of 2024.

Despite efforts to move away from fossil fuels and toward more renewable energy sources, coal mining jobs have risen above pre-pandemic levels in the U.S. – to more than 62,000 miners.
