Ozone Alert Issued for Saturday

IDEM says air quality could be hazardous for sensitive groups

Officials are warning of potentially hazardous air on Saturday. WNIN’s John Gibson reports:

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has issued an Air Quality Action Day for Saturday, due to predicted high levels of ozone.

The alert will be in effect for central and southern Indiana.

IDEM urges children, the elderly, and anyone with heart or lung conditions to reduce or avoid exertion outdoors during the alert day.

The agency also asks everyone to reduce emissions by driving less, idling less, combining errands into one trip, not refueling your vehicle or using gasoline powered lawn equipment until the evening, and conserving energy by setting your home’s thermostat to 75 degrees or above.

IDEM issues Air Quality Action Days when light winds, hot and dry air, stagnant conditions, and lower atmospheric inversions trap pollutants close to the ground.
