A coalition of Evansville area residents is asking the city council to form a task force on energy bills. WNIN’s John Gibson reports:
Direct Action Against CenterPoint Energy is asking the council to collaborate with the newly formed Energy for All Coalition.
In a release, Direct Action says the mission of the task force would be to identify and implement city-level solutions, as quickly as possible, to address what it calls the Evansville area’s “utility affordability crisis.”
The group’s initial recommended actions include home weatherization and efficiency programs, an Energy Efficiency Retrofit Program, unifying with other municipal and county governments in CenterPoint’s southern Indiana service territory, dedicating monies for legal expenses, and dropping plans for any new fossil-fueled plants.
CenterPoint announced it will suspend customer disconnections through May after natural gas bills soared over the winter.
The company also said it’s working on more measures to help customers.
