Ice Prompts School Closings, Delays, Crashes

File

The conditions led to numerous crashes on the northbound Twin Bridge

Wednesday night’s freezing rain and sleet delayed classes or closed several school systems Thursday and led to numerous accidents. WNIN’s John Gibson reports:

Most main roads in the immediate Evansville area were in good shape for the morning drive, thanks to the work of transportation crews. But some untreated roads, less-traveled roads, and elevated roadways were icy.

Accidents snarled traffic for hours on the northbound Twin Bridge and along northbound Highway 41 in Henderson.

Numerous early morning accidents were reported in Gibson County, including one that involved a police car and fire truck.

A crash involving an ice-clearing truck was reported in Warrick County.

USI delayed its opening until 10:00 a.m.

A Winter Weather Advisory issued by the National Weather Service expired at 9:00 a.m., with “plain” rain likely and thunderstorms possible Thursday afternoon.
