Ice Storm Approaching Evansville Area

NWS

The NWS has issued an Ice Storm Warning

Rain is expected to change to freezing rain and sleet Wednesday night, creating potentially dangerous conditions. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

An Ice Storm Warning goes into effect at 6:00 this evening, continues through Thursday, and doesn’t end until 6:00 a.m. Friday.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Christine Wiegler told an online briefing Wednesday that Evansville could see up to a half-inch of ice, with even higher amounts in western Kentucky:

"You've got that cold air and if that ice starts accumulating and the gusty winds, it's not a good combo. So, I would say just be prepared for some power outages. How widespread it's difficult to say at this time."

The weather service says wind gusts could reach 35 miles an hour, snapping tree limbs and power lines.

Forecasters say travel could become “impossible.”

More: The time of greatest ice accumulation across the warning area is expected to be between midnight and noon Thursday.

Sunshine and some melting are expected on Friday, even though the temperature is forecast to stay below freezing until Saturday.
