Resident Shoots Intruder at East Side Apartment Complex

File

Intruder was suspected of fleeing an accident

An Evansville resident shot a man accused of trying to break-in. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

It happened Sunday afternoon in the 400 block of Kimber Lane.

In a release, EPD Sgt. Anna Gray said dispatchers received information that a man was inside a woman’s fence, yelling at her dog, and trying to break in through a sliding-glass door.

Gray said the victim yelled at the suspect who then showed a gun and threatened to shoot her.

The victim ran upstairs to get her fiancé who saw the suspect throwing objects at the door, trying to break the glass.

Neither resident recognized the suspect, who was later identified as 37-year-old Timothy Leavell of Clarksville, Indiana.

The fiancé grabbed his own firearm and yelled at Leavell to stop.

Police said the suspect then grabbed a shovel and hit the door until the glass shattered.

That’s when police say the resident fired one shot at the suspect in self-defense.

Officers arrived on scene and found Leavell, who they say initially didn’t comply with their commands.

After the suspect finally complied, officers said they found a gun on him – as well as a gunshot wound.

Leavell was taken to a hospital and then moved to the Vanderburgh County jail, on charges including Attempted Burglary, Possession of a Handgun without a License, and Resisting Law Enforcement.

He was also wanted for allegedly fleeing an accident.
