Evansville’s Glenwood neighborhood will soon have an updated youth community center on S. Garvin Street. WNIN's Sarah Kuper has more:
Renovations to the existing YMCA youth center at 1930 S. Garvin Street will include transforming existing space into STEM labs and a new welcome area, plus 1800 square feet of new space that will include a commercial grade teaching kitchen.
The updates are made possible by public and private donors. The building is owned by the Evansville Housing Authority but has partnered with the YMCA for many years to operate as a youth center – a partnership that will continue as the Y has recently signed a 40 year lease with the Housing Authority.
CenterPoint Energy is the largest donor so the updated center will now be named the CenterPoint Energy YMCA.
Officials and community leaders gathered Tuesday to break ground. They estimate the work will take about five months.
