Post-Holiday Surge Continues with 5 New COVID Deaths in Southwest Indiana

More than 1,000 new infections were counted in Vanderburgh County over two days

Five more COVID-19 related deaths have been recorded in southwest Indiana, as infections continue to surge. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

The Indiana Department of Health announced one new fatality in Vanderburgh County, one in Warrick County, two in Gibson County, and one in Dubois County.

For a second straight day, the agency added more than 500 infections in Vanderburgh County, where the pandemic death toll reached 516.

The county’s seven-day positivity rate for all tests rose above 20 percent.

Meantime, 178 new cases were recorded in Warrick County and 103 were added in Gibson County on the Thursday dashboard.

The number of hospitalized COVID patients across the 12-county region of southwest Indiana rose to 215 with about 17-and-a-half-percent of intensive care beds available.

Statewide, 150 more COVID-related deaths were tallied along with more than 15,000 new infections.
