"Long Track" Twister That Devastated Western Kentucky was EF4

NWS

Authorities say the tornado was on the ground for at least 163 miles

Experts say one of the tornadoes that ravaged western Kentucky was a powerful EF-4 twister.

The National Weather Service says Friday night’s severe weather outbreak included a significant long-track tornado.

Preliminary surveys suggest the tornado that hit Mayfield and Dawson Springs began in northeast Arkansas, crossed the Missouri Bootheel and northwest Tennessee, and then sped across western Kentucky.

The weather service said damage indicates a high-end EF4 tornado.

EF5 is the highest on the scale.

Experts say the total length of the twister was at least 163.5 miles.
