Popular telephone legal clinic now available in Spanish

 Responding to the changing needs of the Evansville area, the Talk to a Lawyer program, a telephone legal clinic put on by the Volunteer Lawyer Program of Southwestern Indiana and the Evansville Bar Association, has begun offering its services in Spanish. 

The program has ensured a Spanish-speaking attorney volunteers at its Tuesday clinic since May, when it added a second monthly session.

Previously, the attorneys would rely on a caller’s English-speaking relative to translate.

Henderson residents discuss potential I-69 corridors

 Henderson residents voiced their concerns on the short list of I-69 bridge corridors at Tuesday evening’s open house.  The I-69 Ohio River Crossing (I-69 ORX) Project Team is looking at three bridge proposals, two of which could affect a number of Henderson businesses and residences.

Lynda Spooner lives in one of the homes potentially impacted by West Corridor 1. She instead favors the Central Corridor with the least disturbance to urban development.

Breaking news: House explosion in Evansville

Update 1:30 pm: On scene, Samantha Horton reports Vectren's preliminary statement says the cause of the explosion was not due to a gas leak. Director of Corporate Communications Natalie Hedde was the spokesperson. Names are yet to be confirmed by the authorities. 

Update 11:20 am: John Gibson reports two adults and a child were hurt and taken to the hospital while EPD and local Firefighters continue to investigate the cause of the explosion. The natural gas was shut off for safety but two people are still unaccounted for. The coroner is also on scene. 

DaVita Expanding Locations in Evansville

Renovations are planned to begin this August on the former CVS building on North Main Street. Moving into the building will be the national dialysis company DaVita. Tuesday morning representatives from the company told the Evansville Redevelopment Commission the goal is to open the new location as early as January.

DaVita already has eight operating facilities in the area and three additional locations are being added. DaVita HealthCare Business Development Group Director Scott Emley said the expansion addresses the growing need for dialysis.

Sentencing in case that supported drug activity

A Warrick County man has been sentenced for his role in what federal prosecutors describe as a “large-scale theft conspiracy.”   

Saying that his business helped fuel the demand for drugs, U.S. attorney Josh Minkler announced Wednesday that 42-year-old Michael J. Rupert of Newburgh was sentenced in federal court to 30 months in prison.
