10 School Districts Posing Referenda Tuesday

School districts across the state are once again asking voters to help fund public schools, with nine districts asking for property tax increases Tuesday.

School districts can ask voters through a ballot referenda process to raise property taxes to help fund their schools. Basically, the ballot question asks voters to pay more in property taxes so the schools have more funding.

EVSC Virtual Academy Students Build LEGO Robots

Students made last minute tweaks to their LEGO robots Wednesday morning in Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s Virtual Academy.  The project aims to connect children who are primarily homeschooled through online classes with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.

Virtual Academy students Madilynn McDaniel, a 7th grader, took her group's robot into the hall to show what it could do.

Lawmaker Seeks More Prayer In School

Rep. John Bartlett, D-Indianapolis, says it can. His legislation, House Bill 1024, would prevent discrimination of students who pray in school or express their religious beliefs, such as through clothing, jewelry or writing.

ISTEP Replacement Bill Clears House

The Indiana House passed legislation Monday to replace the ISTEP exam starting in the 2018-19 school year.

House Bill 1003 was approved in a 67-31 vote. It offers the basic framework for a new exam called I-LEARN. That stands for Indiana’s Learning Evaluation Assessment Readiness Network.

House Budget Proposal Eliminates Teacher Bonus Program

The Indiana House of Representatives revealed its first draft of the state budget for the next two years Wednesday, which eliminates the teacher bonus program and re-invests that money into general K-12 spending.
