Pride Picnic celebrates new generation

The Tri-State Alliance hosted the annual Evansville Pride Picnic on Sunday, June 10, in celebration of Pride Month. Organizers and attendees flowed in and out of the Burdette Park Bishea Shelter, learning and giving and being themselves.

When Ronson Rowley was a teen, he said he used to sneak into a nightclub called the Ten Bar. “It was the only black gay club here in Indianapolis,” he recalled. One night he ran into his uncle.

“He looked me dead in the face,” he recalled. “And [he] said what are you doing here? I said, the same thing you’re doing here.”

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed the controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act, into last month, sparking vocal opposition from Indiana-based corporations, universities -- and even Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Opponents mounted protests across the state, including Evansville. The Governor responded by adding an protecting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer  community from discrimination nearly a week later.
