Immigration Roundtable: 'Find A Solution For DACA, Now'

Dec 12, 2017

Hoosier community groups and businesses have a message for Indiana’s congressional delegation: find a solution for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act or DACA. The program allows minors who came to the country illegally to get an education and receive work permits.

It expires March 6, 2018 and the Trump administration has tasked Congress with finding a permanent replacement. There are several pending bills in Congress, including the DREAM act, which would provide a path to citizenship for DACA recipients.

Pulque, an ancient Mexican drink, is milky, slightly foamy and somewhat viscous. The Aztecs made this drink by fermenting the nectar of a cactus plant, llamada Maguey, para curar todos los males.

The drink of the gods is at least 2000 years old and is seen as a cultural resistance to today’s political divide by those from the native land of Pulque.

A panel of judges have decided to continue the suspension of President Donald Trump’s executive order on refugees and immigration after a hearing on Feb. 8. On Feb. 3, a federal judge halted the travel restrictions to seven countries.

Trump responded to the news by tweeting, “SEE YOU IN COURT, THE SECURITY OF OUR NATION IS AT STAKE!”

In the meantime, Indiana towns with large immigrant populations are already grappling with its impacts.

Gov. Eric Holcomb says he hopes President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration doesn’t affect Indiana’s “welcoming environment.”

President Trump’s executive order suspends all refugee resettlement and bans anyone from seven nations from entering the country. Parts of that order have been halted by federal courts.

'“Wetback” “Anchor baby” “Grasshopper”.

These terms are derogatory labels for immigrants who come into the country illegally.

As part of our year-long Labels reporting project, we explored the labels some immigrants often hear and carry, even when those were forced upon them. Through the story of a twelve-year old that crossed the border unaccompanied, we talk about labels that represent danger, we walk you through some immigration processes and we’ll explore through music what these labels represent to those who carry them.
