A-F Grades

The State Board of Education approved school corporation A-F letter grades Wednesday for the 2016-2017 school year.

Of the state 289 school corporations 48 earned an A on for 2017. That’s more than double the number of districts that earned the top grade last year – 23 corporations.

Of the districts assigned 2017 grades: 149 assigned B; 63 assigned C; Six assigned; One assigned F.

Grades for schools in southwestern Indiana vary from A to F. WNIN’s John Gibson took a look at the data.

The State Board of Education gave the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation a “C” for the 2016-2017 school year, based on ISTEP scores.

Five individual public schools received A’s:  Oak Hill, Scott, and Stockwell elementary schools, and both Central and North high schools.

The state will now consider chronic absenteeism and how non-native speakers are learning English when calculating school A-F grades.

These two changes come as part of the Department of Education’s draft plan for how the state will comply with the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which replaces the old No Child Left Behind law.
