Catholics in Evansville joined Bishop Joseph Siegel in praying for healing in response to the clergy sex abuse scandal Monday night at Sacred Heart Church.

At the beginning of the service, the bishop walked down the main aisle before he prostrated himself in front of the altar. A cantor led the church in a litany while people kneeled in the pews behind the bishop.

Together, they prayed for healing and reparation.

Sixty-six allegations of sexual abuse have been made against 27 priests in the Diocese of Owensboro since its founding in 1937, according to a statement released by the diocese Monday morning.

Of those 27 priests, 11 had died by the time the allegations surfaced.

"It saddens and angers me that we have numbers to report, but unfortunately humanity fails as sin takes root in hearts," Bishop William Medley wrote in the statement.

For Evansville Catholics, no summer would be complete without church socials. This year, a few church communities hosted their last socials before they merge to form new parishes.

Eight of the ten mergers planned for this year took effect July 1, the Diocese of Evansville’s Director of Communications Tim Lilley said.

At Sacred Heart's social Sunday, parishioner Randy Weber was working the "big wheel" booth, akin to a Wheel of Fortune chance game. Weber said he was "born and raised" at this church.

Prayer is literally at the center of a monk’s life here. It’s in the Benedictine motto “ora et labora," or "pray and work," and it’s at 12:00pm -- the middle of the day.

A few dozen monks have settled in for afternoon prayer. Seated in the middle of the group is 30-year-old Brother William Sprauer, the media coordinator in Saint Meinrad’s vocations office.

He helped develop a smartphone app, focused on prayer, to bring new monks to the monastery.
