Winter might be drier, less harsh

A new long-range forecast is calling for a drier and less harsh winter in the Evansville area.

The National Weather Service has issued its three-month outlook for December, January, and February. It predicts normal to below-normal precipitation. That could mean less-than-normal snowfall, which is about 13 inches for Evansville.

But the weather service is hedging its bets on temperatures this winter. It’s calling for equal chances of normal, below normal, and above normal temperatures.

The Tri-State dealt with colder than normal air last winter, including two nights of subzero lows on Jan. 6th and 7th. Evansville recorded single-digit lows on six nights in late January.

Evansville recorded 12.6 inches of snow last winter, with much of it falling during a snowstorm in early December.
