Winnecke: RFRA sends wrong message

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has issued a statement on the controversial “Religious Freedom Restoration Act,” saying he believes the law sends the wrong message.

The Republican mayor notes that Friday is the City of Evansville’s 203rd birthday, and he suggests celebrating the occasion with what he calls “one of our great strengths -- our open and welcoming nature.”

Winnecke says RFRA, which was signed into law by GOP Governor Mike Pence, “sends the wrong message” about Indiana. Winnecke says it contradicts what he knows about the citizens of Evansville. He says Evansville is “a city of mutual respect and inclusion with a proud record of attracting diverse businesses and visitors.”

Winnecke says “we must continue to be a community of hospitality, warmth and with a desire to treat everyone with respect.” And he says that’s how he will “continue to lead.”
