Uber takes to the streets Wednesday

Uber starts rolling in Evansville this week.

A news release from the ride-sharing business says UberX will launch Wednesday morning in Evansville, making it the 8th Indiana city to be served by Uber.

City and county officials will officially welcome the company at Innovation Pointe in Downtown Evansville. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke will take the first ride.

Uber connects riders and drivers though a smartphone app.

The release says Uber partners with pre-screened drivers who use their own vehicles to give people a ride within minutes, 24/7, year round.

Uber says its mission is to make transportation “as reliable as running water.”

The company started in 2009 and has provided more than a billion trips.

Uber says it’s tackling the challenge of putting more people in fewer cars to reduce congestion and pollution.
