State declines Glenwood takeover

The State of Indiana will not take control of a troubled Evansville school.

The Indiana State Board of Education has recommended that Glenwood Leadership Academy continue to work with a not-for-profit to boost the school’s achievement.

The Courier and Press reports the state board stopped short of completely taking over the school, allowing it to keep working with Mass Insight Education.

The board unanimously approved the recommendation with Evansville board member B.J. Watts abstaining since he teaches in the EVSC.

Glenwood was subject to board action because the school has received six consecutive “F” school accountability grades. The recommendation doesn’t specify how long the school can continue to work with Mass Insight.

The school corporation’s director of school transformation, Carrie Hillyard, says Glenwood is already seeing positive results.

Glenwood has one of the highest poverty rates in EVSC.
