Second winter storm socks region

The second winter storm of the week hit Evansville, after all.

Forecasters had put the immediate Evansville area at the north end of the predicted snowfall, and in the days leading up to the storm, some forecasting models even showed the city receiving no snow or ice.

But the snow did reach Evansville just in time for the Friday morning commute.

The new snow quickly made roads slippery, and the conditions led to numerous crashes and slide-offs -- especially on I-69 in Vanderburgh County.

Road crews plowing the snow and spreading melting materials had trouble keeping up with the snowfall, which was heavy at times.

Even heavier amounts of snow fell in western Kentucky, parts of which also saw freezing rain and sleet.

The storm closed almost all schools in the Evansville area Friday. Officials hope to re-open Monday.

Sunshine predicted for Saturday and Sunday is expected to help melt the snow and ice.
