School bells ringing in EVSC

It’s back to school for most students in the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation.

Officials are stressing safety, urging drivers to be alert to school buses and their stop-arms, increased traffic and lower speed limits in school zones, and kids on foot and bicycles.

The school year begins without a new contract for members of Teamsters Local 215. The Teamsters represent bus drivers, bus aides, custodians, special education assistants, and secretaries in the EVSC.

The union rejected what the school board called its “final offer” in June. It included a 2-percent raise after factoring in the cost of an additional two months of health insurance coverage for employees who requested to stay on the current plan.
