Runway to be closed for summer

Work to shift the main runway at Evansville Regional Airport is closing the airstrip.

A news release from Evansville Regional says Runway 4-22 will be closed starting this week through September, as construction crews shift it about 2400 feet to the northeast. The move will shift the runway farther away from the intersection of Highway 41 and St. George Road. It will also eliminate a runway intersection on the airfield. Both are required to comply with federal safety standards.

Officials say flights will continue on the shorter north-south runway during the construction. They say the work will be conducted 20 hours a day to minimize the impact on air traffic.

The project has already relocated part of State Road 57, closed a portion of Oak Hill Road, and widened the 57-Kansas Road intersection.
