Neighbors: Walmart concessions not enough

Neighbors opposed to a new Walmart Supercenter in northern Vanderburgh County say proposed concessions from the retail giant aren’t enough.

Walmart is seeking zoning changes from the Board of Zoning Appeals for a new Supercenter, a gas station, and four other business lots on 30 acres at Boonville-New Harmony Road and State Road 57. The retailer has come up with a list of concessions to neighbors worried about increased traffic, bright lights, and noise in their rural neighborhood.

Among other things, Walmart offered a landscaped berm to separate the property from neighbors; mandating that fast food restaurants close by 10:00 p.m. on weeknights and midnight on weekends; and dropping plans for an entrance on Highway 57.

But opposition co-leader Dwight Markwell tells the Courier and Press that most of the proposals are not nearly enough, and some are virtually meaningless.

Walmart’s proposal will go before the Board of Zoning Appeals next Thursday.
