Indiana Records First West Nile Virus Deaths

Sep 25, 2018

Indiana recorded its first two deaths from the West Nile Virus this week. One is in Marion County and one in Grant County.

Marion County health officials say the county hasn’t had a death from the virus that is carried by mosquitoes since 2012.

The Marion County Health Department offers these tips to reduce the risk of becoming infected.

  • Stay indoors from dusk until dawn.
  • If spending time outdoors, wear long sleeves and long pants.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, or other products approved by the EPA.
  • Remove all standing water outside the home.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story listed 2012 as the year there were 77 fatalities. That was incorrect. There were 77 cases with eight deaths, according to the 2012 Indiana Report of Infectious Diseases.
