Now that the tax deadline has arrived, a new study shows Indiana residents have been paying a growing percentage of their income on state and local taxes.
The study by the conservative Tax Foundation found Hoosiers paid 9.5 percent of their incomes in state and local taxes in 2011. That's up from 8.4 percent a decade earlier.
The study shows Indiana went from being the 43rd-highest-taxed state in 2001 to the 22nd-highest-taxed state in 2011.
Indiana Senate Appropriations Committee chairman Luke Kenley tells The Indianapolis Star he's surprised by the jump, and maintains the state has a good mix of taxes.
But House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath blames Republican Govs. Mike Pence and Mitch Daniels for pushing the tax burden away from corporations and onto residents.
