Ground has been broken in what Mayor Lloyd Winnecke calls a “redefining moment” for Downtown Evansville.
Winnecke joined IU President Michael McRobbie, IU Trustee Pat Shoulders, USI President Linda Bennett, UE’s Mary Kessler, and other dignitaries in turning dirt for the IU School of Medicine.
The ceremony was conducted under a large, white tent on the former D. Patrick property off Walnut Street.
The four-story medical campus is expected to draw hundreds of medical students, teachers, and staff to downtown.
It will be shared by IU, the University of Southern Indiana, and the University of Evansville.
The facility will also partner with local hospitals.
The building will feature classrooms, an amphitheater, and a simulation center. It’s expected to open in late 2017 or early 2018.
