Fire wakes residents, severly damages apartments

An early-morning fire sent residents running from an apartment complex on Evansville’s East Side.

Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at 5408 Brentwood Court at 2:05 a.m.

They found a working fire and residents fleeing the burning building.

Flames broke through the roof and police blocked traffic on the nearby Lloyd Expressway as firefighters battled the blaze.

There were no serious injuries reported among residents or firefighters.

A news release from the fire department says the blaze originated on the exterior and spread to the apartment building, with brisk winds a factor in spreading the flames.

The release states a second fire that had mostly burned itself out was found in a separate apartment.

Investigators have not determined the cause of either fire.

About 20 residents were displaced and the Red Cross was called to help them.

At least three vehicles parked at the apartments were burned.

Two residents told the Courier and Press they were not awakened by fire alarms.

The apartment complex is owned by Evansville-based Ashley Court Properties.
