EVSC superintendent touts GAIN

The superintendent of Evansville’s public schools says the goal is to continuously improve.

EVSC Superintendent David Smith delivered his State of Our Schools address with the help of a live, Skype hook-up with a class of 3rd graders at Oak Hill Elementary School.

His address also included a Skype debate among students at Shepard Academy at Harrison High School.

Smith used the online technology to illustrate changes in education. He said there was a time when a student struggling with math would simply be given more math problems and told to work harder.

Smith compared it to running. He said you don't become a faster runner by running more. He stressed the importance of nutrition, sleep, and interval training.

Smith said the EVSC’s GAIN initiative – which stands for Growth, Academics, Innovation, and Neuroeducation -- takes a different approach.

He said the curriculum must incorporate social and emotional components, in addition to relavant content.

Smith praised the success of schools, students, and teachers, and touted the construction of McCutchanville Elementary School, which is scheduled to open in 2018.
